Painting is not just about appearance. Shipping containers are made from corten steel, which naturally resists rust, but once the original coating starts to wear, corrosion can set in quickly. A new coat of paint acts as a protective barrier, extending the life of your container and helping it withstand the British weather.
A fresh colour can also help your container blend in with its surroundings. You might choose green or brown for rural settings, or bright colours for a creative workspace or retail unit. If your container sits in direct sunlight, a lighter shade will reflect heat and help keep it cooler inside, which is ideal if it is being used as an office or workshop.
Before you start, it is worth gathering everything you need. Painting a container can usually be done over a weekend, so having your tools and materials to hand will make the process smoother.
You will need:
Wire brush or grinder with a wire wheel
Sandpaper or sanding discs
Degreaser or mild detergent
Paint scraper
Rust converter (optional for heavy rust)
Anti-corrosive metal primer
High-quality exterior or marine-grade paint
Paint rollers, brushes, and a tray
Masking tape
PPE such as mask, gloves, goggles, and overalls
If you have access to a paint sprayer, even better. It can make the job quicker and produce a smoother finish. Be sure to mask off windows, vents, and locks before spraying.
Preparation is key when painting metal. Start by inspecting your container carefully, noting any rust patches, peeling paint, or dents. The better you prepare the surface, the longer your paint will last.
Use a wire brush or grinder to remove any flaking paint and rust. Once the surface is smooth, wash the entire container with a degreaser or detergent to remove dirt, grease, and salt. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before moving on. Moisture trapped beneath paint can cause bubbling or peeling later, so patience here pays off.
Once the surface is clean and dry, apply a coat of anti-corrosive metal primer. This helps the paint stick properly and provides an extra layer of protection against rust.
Focus on corners, welds, and any areas where you removed rust, as these are the most vulnerable spots. Use a brush for detailed areas and a roller or sprayer for larger sections. Allow the primer to dry fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions, usually between six and twelve hours.
Choose a dry, mild day, ideally between 10°C and 25°C, with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours. Apply your first coat using a roller for flat surfaces and a brush for edges and corners. If you are using a sprayer, keep the nozzle moving evenly to avoid drips or streaks.
After the first coat has dried, apply a second for full coverage and durability. Two coats are normally enough, but heavily exposed containers may benefit from a third. Once finished, check for any missed areas, especially along the roof, corners, and door edges where water tends to sit.
Not all paints are suitable for metal containers. The best choices are marine-grade, industrial metal, or exterior metal paints designed for steel surfaces. These are made to resist UV damage, rain, and temperature changes.
When it comes to colour, think about both function and style. Light shades such as white, cream, or light grey help reflect heat, while darker tones like navy, green, or anthracite create a smart, modern look. You can also match colours to your business branding or outdoor surroundings.
Even with the best paint job, containers benefit from regular care. Once a year, inspect the surface for any signs of rust, chips, or peeling. Clean the container and touch up small areas before they spread.
Keeping your container clear of standing water, mud, or overgrown plants will also help prolong its life. If your container is in a particularly exposed or coastal area, consider applying a new topcoat every few years to keep it in top condition.
It is easy to rush painting jobs, but a few common mistakes can lead to poor results:
Skipping primer or surface preparation
Painting when the surface is still damp
Using the wrong type of paint such as indoor or wood paint
Applying coats too thickly or not allowing them to dry fully
Take your time. Each stage builds on the last. Proper preparation and patience will always give a smoother, longer-lasting result.
Painting your shipping container is one of the easiest ways to extend its life and give it a smart new look. With basic tools and a weekend of effort, you can achieve a finish that looks professional and will protect your investment for years to come.
