Refrigerated containers require a 3-phase 380/440 volt power supply. This supply must include both earth and neutral connections to function correctly and safely. Each container is fitted with a 5-pin 32A CE plug, which means it needs to be connected to a minimum 32-amp, motor-rated supply via a compatible 5-wire socket.
To ensure your setup is compliant and performs as expected, the following components are necessary:
Isolator Switch
An isolator should be installed close to the distribution board. This allows the unit to be safely disconnected for maintenance or in the event of an emergency.
Type ‘D’ Circuit Breaker
We recommend using a Type ‘D’ circuit breaker, which is specifically designed to accommodate the high start-up current typical of refrigeration compressors.
If you’re uncertain about the power infrastructure at your site—particularly whether it supports 3-phase power at the correct voltage and amperage—it’s crucial to consult a qualified electrician before proceeding with installation. Improper connection can result in equipment damage or pose safety risks.
To power a refrigerated shipping container safely:
Use a 3-phase 380/440V supply with earth and neutral
Connect using a 32A, 5-pin CE plug and compatible socket
Install an isolator and a Type ‘D’ circuit breaker
Always seek advice from a qualified electrician if in doubt
